Few classic Mercedes-Benz models possess the elegance and timeless appeal of the 190SL. Introduced in 1955 as the more refined sibling to the legendary 300SL, the 190SL combined graceful styling with comfortable touring manners, quickly establishing itself as one of the marque's most desirable open-top sports cars. Today, surviving examples remain highly sought after, with correctly restored cars commanding increasing attention from collectors around the world.
The example featured here is a matching numbers car that arrived at Hilton & Moss after travelling from the United States to the UK in need of a complete restoration. Finished today in its original factory specification of DB180 Silver Grey over a red leather interior, the car has undergone a painstaking, ground-up restoration entirely in-house, returning it to a condition that reflects both its original craftsmanship and the exceptional standards expected of a concours-quality restoration.
The quality of the finished restoration was recognised in 2025, when the car was awarded a Highly Commended ribbon in the Restoration Class at the prestigious London Concours, a fitting acknowledgement of the thousands of hours invested by the Hilton & Moss team.
A Challenging Starting Point
Like many Mercedes-Benz 190SLs imported from the United States, this example had endured decades of use and previous repairs before arriving at our Hertfordshire workshops. Although fundamentally complete, extensive corrosion was present throughout the body and structure, making a cosmetic restoration neither appropriate nor possible.
Once the car had been completely dismantled and stripped back to bare metal, the true extent of the deterioration became apparent. Corrosion affected large sections of the body shell including the sills, floor assemblies, wings, lower body panels and numerous structural areas. Many original panels had deteriorated beyond repair and required complete replacement rather than localised repairs.
This approach ensured the body retained the correct factory appearance, structural integrity and panel alignment while preserving as much original material as possible.
Expert Metal Fabrication and Body Restoration
Body restoration remains one of the defining stages of any 190SL rebuild, requiring considerable expertise and patience to achieve factory standards.
Every stage of the metalwork on this project was completed within Hilton & Moss' dedicated bodyshop. Large structural sections were reconstructed, intricate repair pieces fabricated by hand and every panel aligned with exceptional precision before final welding.
Throughout the restoration, countless hours were invested in refining panel gaps, ensuring perfect symmetry and recreating the subtle body lines that define the elegant proportions of the 190SL. Once the fabrication work was complete, the shell underwent extensive preparation before receiving its original DB180 Silver Grey finish.
The result is a body that not only reflects the car's original appearance but also provides a significantly improved foundation for many decades of future enjoyment.
Mechanical Restoration
Alongside the extensive body restoration, every mechanical component was carefully inspected and rebuilt as required.
The engine, gearbox, braking system, suspension, steering and drivetrain were all overhauled to ensure the car performs exactly as Mercedes-Benz intended. Components were either restored, refurbished or replaced where necessary, always with an emphasis on maintaining originality and reliability.
Every assembly was rebuilt using factory specifications before the vehicle underwent comprehensive testing and final tuning by our experienced technicians.
Interior Restoration
Complementing the freshly restored exterior is a beautifully retrimmed cabin finished in the original red leather and boucle weave carpet specification.
Working within our in-house trimming department, the interior was carefully recreated using leather sourced directly from Germany to closely match the factory finish. Seats, door cards, carpets and trim panels were all restored or remanufactured where required, while every detail was considered to preserve the authentic character of the original car.
The finished interior provides a striking contrast against the Silver Grey coachwork and perfectly captures the understated elegance that made the 190SL such an enduring icon.
Award-Winning Restoration
Following completion, the car made its public debut at London Concours 2025, where it received a Highly Commended ribbon in the Restoration Class.
The award reflects the craftsmanship demonstrated throughout the project and recognises the dedication of the Hilton & Moss restoration team in returning this rare Mercedes-Benz to an exceptionally high standard.
