Description
Hilton & Moss are delighted to present this early, matching numbers Mercedes-Benz 190SL fresh from a total restoration.
Few cars capture the effortless glamour of the 1950s quite like the Mercedes-Benz 190SL. Introduced as the more accessible sibling to the legendary 300SL Gullwing, the 190SL combined elegant styling, refined engineering and open-top motoring into a package that has become one of Mercedes-Benz's most enduring automotive icons. Today, it remains one of the most recognisable classic roadsters ever produced.
Introduced in 1955, and manufactured until 1963, a total of 25,800 examples would be made, the majority of which being built in left-hand drive configuration for the European and American markets. Featuring a 1.9 litre in-line four-cylinder engine with a single overhead cam and twin Solex carburettors, the car produced 120bhp.
The car presented here today is fresh from a full and comprehensive concours restoration carried out entirely in-house by the expert Hilton & Moss team. Representing thousands of hours of meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail, this remarkable example has been returned to a standard befitting one of Stuttgart's finest creations.
Originally delivered to New York in January 1956, the car remained in the USA until 2021, arriving in the UK at Hilton & Moss where the restoration work would later commence.
As a fully matching numbers example (Engine, gearbox, chassis and axle), every aspect of the restoration has been undertaken with originality, authenticity and longevity in mind. The car was stripped to its bare shell before extensive metalwork and panel restoration were carried out, ensuring exceptional panel fit and structural integrity throughout. The body has then been finished in its timeless and elegant, but all important original factory colour of DB180G Silver Grey Metallic, a shade that perfectly accentuates the graceful curves and understated sophistication of the 190SL.
Complementing the exterior is a beautifully appointed 1079 Red leather interior, handcrafted to original factory specification. The vibrant red upholstery provides a striking contrast against the silver coachwork, creating one of the most desirable and iconic colour combinations available on the model. Every detail, from the seating and carpets through to the dashboard, switchgear and brightwork, has been restored or refinished to the highest possible standard, creating an interior that is every bit as impressive as the exterior. The car also features the desirable Gullwing bucket seats which only the earliest 190SLs built before May 1956 benefit from.
Mechanically, the restoration has been equally comprehensive. The engine, transmission, braking system, suspension and steering have all been meticulously rebuilt. The engine has been run in and tuned on the dyno with the car subsequently completing extensive shakedown and road testing.
The finished result is far more than simply a restored classic car. It is a showcase of the capabilities, passion and craftsmanship of the Hilton & Moss restoration department. Built to be driven, admired and enjoyed. Now registered in the UK, this excellent Mercedes is ready for the open road, concours lawns or perhaps adventures overseas once again!
Available for viewing and demonstration at our Hertfordshire showrooms, this Mercedes represents an opportunity that seldom arises.
